Job Description – estimator

General

  • Be knowledgeable with the current NEC code, NFPA 70E, Myers Electric Safety Manual, and Myers Electric Team Handbook.
  • Maintain a Positive Attitude.
  • Any concern or feedback about the work environment or other team members should be brought to the attention of your direct supervisor who can help. 
  • No foul or offensive language is allowed.

Job performance

  • Estimates shall be designed in compliance with the current Code and Authority Having Jurisdiction.
  • Work shall be performed safely in a neat workmanlike manner and in accordance with Myers Electric SWP (Safe Work Practices), and/or Customer SWP whichever is most stringent.
  • Work in an efficient manner and eliminate down time. (There is always something that can be done: clean up, organize, plan ahead etc.) 
  • Do not perform any work without a clear understanding of what is expected from the customer and/or your supervisor. Any deviation from original scope of work by the customer must be approved via change order. 

Communication

  •  Give each customer your full attention. Do not take personal calls, texts, or emails during customer interactions. 
  • Keep all on-site communication focused on the job. Personal conversations should be limited to true emergencies.
  • Ask clarifying questions before starting any task to ensure accuracy, expectations, and alignment.
  • Communicate with customers using clear, simple language. Avoid unnecessary technical terms or jargon.

Forms / Receipts

  • Fill out any customer feedback forms (positive and negative) and vendor forms (recognize good service) as needed in a timely manner.

Specific Job-Related Tasks

  • Prioritize and respond to bid requests from lead generation and referrals.
  • Review drawings.
  • Conduct job walks and take notes accordingly.
  • Use estimating software to create proposals.
  • Communicate with customers/owners to clarify schedules, expectations, and major milestones.
  • Send out requests for quotes and lead times.
  • Research materials and building codes to ensure compliance. 
  • Facilitate successful turnover of notes, markups, and drawings to Project Manager.
  • Provide a detailed budget with allocated time and materials categorized by cost code to Admin and Project Manager. 
  • Coordinate with Project Manager and install team for any needed information or questions.
  • Organize and maintain estimate files and notes.

Job sites, shop, and vehicles

Oversee compliance in all these areas:

  • Keep all areas neat and clean as you go.
  • Keep tools and material organized for ease of use and access.
  • Use the “full hands in full hands out” approach to increase efficiency to reduce unnecessary trips.
  • Eliminate all tripping hazards.
  • Use job bins for material gathering and do not remove any material already held for a job without a replacement arranged and notifying the person who pulled the material.

Communications on job sites

  • Do not take phone calls, emails, or text while talking in person with a customer.
  • All communications shall be job related only, no personal communication except for emergencies. 
  • Ask clarifying questions prior to performing the work.
  • Do not use trade jargon with customers.

Forms / Receipts

  • Make sure all material lists are filled out before leaving job site.
  • Fill out any customer feedback forms (positive and negative) and vendor forms (recognize good service) as needed in a timely manner.
  • All daily expense receipts and job material list shall be submitted by the end of the work day.

Specific Job-Related Tasks

  • Review Scope of Work, notes, budget, and major milestones from Estimator. 
  • Conduct job walks prior to starting a job.
  • Identify any hazards or safety concerns and develop Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). 
  • Coordinate Field Team scheduling.
  • Manage Journeyman, Apprentices, and General Laborers assigned to the project.
  • Ensure the permits have been requested/obtained as needed.
  • Coordinate inspections.
  • Constant updating and communication with owners/customers. 
  • Track progress vs estimated schedule and budget.
  • Ensure that all necessary tools, materials, and rentals are available as needed. 
  • Monitor quality control on projects. 
  • Facilitate daily toolbox talk and safety meetings. 
  • Ensure that the Install Team is working safely according to Myers Safe Work Practices. 
  • Interface with Admin Team regarding updates on project progress, including schedule and budget. 
  • Maintain redlines/markups ongoing throughout the project. 
  • Create punch lists as needed.
  • Ensure that materials are not damaged, and any unused material is in a returnable condition.
  • Close out projects by submitting all notes, drawings, redlines, etc.
